This fuchsia feline may not be Frosted Flakes Tony, but she still thinks Saturdays are grrrrrrrrreat! Particularly after two cups of coffee.

Keep It Gorey

February 22, 2013 § Leave a comment

As in Edward. Today marks what would have been the 88th birthday of the late, great, incomparably dark and wonderfully dreary Edward Gorey. For a kid obsessed with ink, paper, and all things macabre, he was a huge inspiration for me and continues to be so. For some reason I want to go draw a cat choking on a goldfish now. Sorry, PETA.

Who Wore It Best?

The 85th Annual Academy Awards are mere days away, which means some lauded people are going to soon have a big ol’ piece of golden tchotchke on their mantlepiece to dust. It also means there’s going to be lots of ogling at ladies in dresses they didn’t buy and jewelry they don’t own.

As an homage to this awards show and the love of film fashion it conjures, here are three of the nominated actresses (Ann Hathaway, Jessica Chastain and Quvenzhané Wallis) each wearing a variation on the dress the winning actress in their respective categories wore the year these young ladies were born…and thus completes today’s tongue/mind twister.

Black Beauty

In response to Illustration Friday’s topic of Wool, this little black sheep has three bags full of the stuff for the Master, the Dame and the little boy who lives down the lane. What you didn’t know is that he also has enough to make a series of turtleneck sweaters he’s selling on Etsy.

Spotlight: Matte Stephens

February 20, 2013 § Leave a comment

I recently stumbled across the artwork of Matte Stephens, a Portland-based artist. I knew after two seconds I was in love with his style, storytelling and humor. His work speaks to an audience appreciative of Charley Harper and Mary Blair-inspired vintage, playful characters that you hope will walk off of the page at any second, and a subtle palette that in other hands might fall short of intriguing but here is vivid and vibrant. So do yourself a favor by checking out his work—I promise it’ll cure any winter blues you might be having. Unless you’re in Australia in which case I’m so mad that you have summer weather.

Gettin’ Squirrely

Walking my dog in the park today, one would think he’d be all about pursuing the squirrels who had ventured out into the less-than-really-brutal cold weather for the odd snack. However, he was way more interested in sniffing mud and trees so he didn’t notice them—not even the one missing a tail.

Missing a tail?! How did that happen? Shut in a door? Shut in a cat’s mouth? Surgically removed for a modeling career?

In honor of that tail-less little creature, here’s my own little bushy-tailed rodent…who may or may not being wearing a falsie.
